How do I set up Google Home or Alexa?

Smart speakers are useful once they are set up properly. Getting there involves a few steps, and we can take care of all of them during a single visit.

Quick Answer

Setting up a Google Home or Amazon Alexa device involves plugging it in, downloading the companion app on your phone, connecting it to your Wi-Fi, and signing in to your account. The setup takes around 15 to 30 minutes if everything goes smoothly. We set these up regularly during home visits.

If you would rather have someone come and set it up for you so it is working properly from the start, give us a call. This is something we do during visits every week.

What is involved in the setup

1

Plugging in and powering on

The first step is simply plugging the device into a power socket and waiting for it to start up. Most devices will show a light or play a sound to indicate they are ready for setup. Placing it somewhere central in the room and away from walls gives the best performance.

2

Downloading the app on your phone

Google Home devices use the Google Home app. Amazon Alexa devices use the Amazon Alexa app. Both are free and available on iPhone and Android. The app is how you set up the device and how you manage its settings going forward.

3

Connecting to your Wi-Fi

The app will guide you through connecting the device to your home Wi-Fi network. You will need your Wi-Fi password for this step. If your router broadcasts two networks (2.4GHz and 5GHz), most smart speakers work best on the 2.4GHz network.

4

Signing in to your account

Google Home requires a Google account and Alexa requires an Amazon account. You will sign in during setup through the app. If you do not have an account, one can be created during the process, though this adds extra time.

5

Testing it and learning the basics

Once set up, it is worth spending a few minutes getting familiar with what the device can do. Asking for the weather, setting a timer, playing music, and controlling the volume are good starting points. Both devices can do much more once you are comfortable with the basics.

6

Connecting other smart home devices

Smart speakers become even more useful when connected to other devices like smart lights, a smart thermostat, or a compatible TV. These can all be added through the same app and controlled by voice once linked. We can help set these up during a visit.

FAQ

Common questions about smart speakers

Which is better, Google Home or Alexa?

Both are very capable. Google Home tends to work better if you already use Gmail and Android. Alexa works well across a wide range of smart home devices. The best choice depends on what you already use.

Do I need a smartphone to set up a smart speaker?

Yes, the initial setup is done through an app on a smartphone or tablet. Once set up, you do not need the phone to use the speaker day to day.

Can I connect my smart speaker to my TV?
