Why is my Wi-Fi so slow?
Slow Wi-Fi is frustrating, but it is usually fixable without calling your internet provider or buying new equipment. There are a handful of common causes worth checking first.
The most common causes of slow Wi-Fi are a router that needs restarting, too many devices connected at once, or the router being too far from where you are using it. In most homes, these are easy to address without buying anything new.
If you would rather have someone come and sort this out for you instead of working through it yourself, that is completely fine. Give us a call and we can take a look during a visit.
What might be causing slow Wi-Fi
The router needs restarting
Routers are small computers and they can slow down or get confused over time, especially if they have been running for weeks without a restart. Turning the router off, waiting 30 seconds, and turning it back on again is the simplest thing to try first. It fixes the problem more often than you might expect.
Too many devices are connected at once
Every device in your home shares the same Wi-Fi connection. Smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, laptops, and streaming devices all use bandwidth. If several of them are active at the same time, your connection can slow down noticeably, especially if someone is streaming video or downloading large files.
The router is too far away or in a poor location
Wi-Fi signal weakens with distance and through walls, floors, and large appliances. If your router is in a cupboard, at one end of the house, or near a microwave, the signal reaching the other rooms may be much weaker than it should be. Moving the router to a more central, open location can make a significant difference.

Book a VisitInterference from other devices or networks
Microwaves, cordless phones, baby monitors, and neighbouring Wi-Fi networks can all interfere with your signal. This is more common in apartments or semi-detached homes where many networks overlap. Switching your router to a less congested Wi-Fi channel can help, and we can do this during a visit.
Your router is old
Routers from more than five or six years ago may simply not be capable of the speeds that modern internet plans provide. If you have upgraded your internet plan but your router is old, the router may be the bottleneck. We can check whether this is the case and advise you on whether a new router is actually worth it.
The problem is with your internet plan, not your Wi-Fi
Sometimes the Wi-Fi in your home is working perfectly well, but the internet connection coming into the house is slow. This can happen during peak hours or if there is a fault with the line. We can test this during a visit and tell you whether calling your internet provider is actually the right next step.

Common questions about slow Wi-Fi
- Should I call my internet provider?
Not necessarily as a first step. Most slow Wi-Fi problems are caused by something in the home rather than the internet connection itself. We can check everything first and tell you whether calling your provider is actually needed.
- Will a new router fix the problem?
Sometimes, but not always. A new router is only worth buying if the existing one is the actual cause. We can check whether your router is the problem before you spend any money.
- My Wi-Fi worked fine before. Why is it suddenly slow?
A sudden slowdown is often caused by a router that needs restarting, a new device on the network using a lot of bandwidth, or interference from a new appliance or neighbour's network. We can run through all of these during a visit.
