Why is my email not working on my phone?
Email that suddenly stops working on a phone is one of the most common tech problems we come across. It is almost always fixable during a single visit.
Email problems on a phone are usually caused by a password change, an account setting that has drifted out of sync, or an app that needs updating. The fix usually involves removing the email account from the phone and adding it back with the correct settings. This is something we sort out during visits regularly.
If your email has stopped working and you would rather have someone come and fix it, give us a call. This is one of the most common problems we deal with.
What might be causing it
Your email password was recently changed
If you changed your email password on a computer or another device, the phone will not automatically know the new password. It will keep trying with the old one and fail silently. Updating the password in the phone's email settings is usually all that is needed.
The account settings have lost connection
Sometimes an email account on a phone loses its connection to the server without any obvious reason. This can happen after a software update or a period of the app being inactive. Removing the account and re-adding it with the correct settings usually restores everything.
The email app needs updating
Apps that have not been updated in a long time can stop working correctly with email servers that have been updated at the other end. Checking whether the app has available updates is a simple first step.

Book a VisitTwo-factor authentication is blocking access
If two-factor authentication is turned on for your email account, some older email apps on phones may not handle it properly and will appear to fail login even with the correct password. Switching to the official app for that email service often resolves this.
The phone's storage is full
When a phone's storage is completely full, apps including email apps can stop syncing new messages. Freeing up storage space by removing unused apps or photos often gets email working again.
The incoming or outgoing server settings are wrong
For some email providers, especially older or smaller ones, the phone needs specific server settings to be entered manually. If these are incorrect or have changed at the provider's end, email will stop working. Getting the correct settings from the provider and entering them takes only a few minutes.

Common questions about email on phones
- Will I lose my emails if I remove and re-add my account?
If your email is hosted through Gmail, Outlook, or a similar service, your emails are stored on the server and will come back when you add the account again. If you use a local email setup, it is worth checking with us before removing anything.
- My email works on my computer but not my phone. Why?
The most common reason is that the account settings on the phone are slightly different from those on the computer, or the phone app has not been updated. We can check the settings and get them matching during a visit.
- Could a recent phone update have caused the problem?
Yes, occasionally a software update can cause the email app to lose its connection to the server. Removing and re-adding the email account usually fixes this.
