How do I set up a new iPhone?
Getting a new iPhone should feel exciting, not overwhelming. Here is what is involved and how we can help make the whole process simple.
Setting up a new iPhone involves turning it on, connecting to Wi-Fi, signing in with your Apple ID, and deciding how to transfer your data from the old phone. The most important part is making sure your contacts, photos, and apps come across correctly. This is something we do during visits regularly and it usually takes under two hours.
If you would rather have someone set it up for you and make sure everything comes across properly, give us a call. This is one of the most common things we help with.
What is involved in setting up a new iPhone
Turning it on and connecting to Wi-Fi
The iPhone will guide you through the initial setup when you turn it on for the first time. The first step is connecting to your home Wi-Fi network, which requires knowing your Wi-Fi password.
Signing in with your Apple ID
Your Apple ID is the email and password you use for the App Store, iCloud, and FaceTime. You will need this during setup. If you cannot remember it, it can be recovered but this takes extra time and is one of the most common places the setup process gets stuck.
Transferring everything from your old phone
This is the part most people worry about. There are a few ways to move your contacts, photos, messages, and apps from an old iPhone to a new one. The most reliable method keeps both phones next to each other during a process called Quick Start. If your old phone is an Android, a different process is used.
Would you rather we handle this?
We set up new iPhones across Ajax, Pickering, Whitby, and Oshawa. We make sure everything transfers correctly before we leave.
Book a VisitMaking sure photos are backed up
Photos are often the thing people are most worried about losing. iCloud Photos can automatically back up every photo to the cloud, but this needs to be set up correctly and requires enough iCloud storage.
Setting up email and key apps
Once the data transfer is complete, email accounts, messaging apps, and any other important apps need to be signed into and tested to make sure everything is working.
Learning where everything is
A new iPhone model may look slightly different from the old one. Settings menus and features may be in different places. Taking a few minutes to get familiar with the new layout makes a big difference to how comfortable you feel using it day to day.
We can take care of this for you
You do not have to work through any of this yourself. If you have a new iPhone that needs setting up and you would rather have someone take care of it for you, that is exactly what we do. We visit homes across Ajax, Pickering, Whitby, and Oshawa and handle phone setups every week.

Common questions about setting up a new iPhone
- Will I lose my photos when I switch to a new iPhone?
Not if the transfer is done correctly. We make sure all photos come across before the old phone is wiped or traded in.
- What if I cannot remember my Apple ID password?
This is very common. We can help recover access to your Apple ID during the visit. It is worth leaving extra time if this is likely to be an issue.
- Can you transfer from an Android phone to a new iPhone?
Yes. The process is different from transferring between two iPhones but we do it regularly. Contacts, photos, and some apps can be moved across.
